Beautiful section of the canal!

Straight after we left this morning, we got to one of the '10 cm locks'. These are usually at the Eastern end of a lake and serve to ensure that a small variation in level of the lake does not set up a (possibly strong) current in the connecting canal stretch. Next to the Borensberg lock is the Göta hotel which appears to be quite well known:

Then we got a stretch with really superb scenery. The canal winds through yellow and purple fields, with a lake (Norrbysjön) below. It appears that the canal hugs a hill: on port the surrounding landscape is very low, on starboard it is level with the canal. It's difficult to catch the beauty properly with pictures:

At the end of this stretch (called the 'Langkanalen' as there are no locks for about 15 miles) you first get 4 sets of double locks in quick succession: Heda, Brunnby, Berg and Oscar). Going down is quite easy although quite a bit of work.

We then tied up in the Gästhamn between the Oscar locks and the (in Göta canal terms) famous Carl Johan flight of 7 stepped locks.

As it is so pretty here, we'll take a break tomorrow and get the bicycles out for some exercise. The pictures of the Carl Johan flight will follow once we have descended it.
