Stepped locks down

We did our first serious descent today, but before we got to the Borenshult locks, we passed the grave of Baltzar von Platen, the designer of the Göta canal. Unfortunately he never saw it completed as he died two years before it was opened.

Next we passed Motala Verkstad where most of the engineering work for the canal was done and where subsequently there was more engineering work, making it the 'birthplace' of Swedish engineering (which of course today includes companies like SKF and Volvo).

Then came the set of 5 stepped locks where you descend 14 m towards Lake Boren. From the top it looks like this:

Going up it can be quite wild:

But going down (5 times) it is very easy. No turbulence but the lock keeper drops you quite fast, almost 3 m in a few minutes.

From below, it looks like this:

Then it was another hour across the lake to Borensberg where we were lucky to get one of the last berths. It seems to suddenly get more busy.

Location:Borensberg
