Just after lunch we left for the 6 mile trip to Motala, which is the start of the Eastern half of the Göta canal. There we also had arranged to lift Onbekommerd out of the water to inspect what damage had been done by our encounter with a rock two days ago. As expected, there is some damage to the port side 'fin keel', but nothing to the hull itself. As the keel damage is in itself also minor, we have agreed with the insurance company that it can be repaired during the winter storage period.
So we are now tied up in the Motala Gästhamn. Motala is where most of the industrial activity in the building of the Göta canal took place: the manufacturing of all the components to build and operate the 58 locks and numerous bridges. It is said that Motala is the birthplace of Swedish industry as Sweden was mainly agricultural before those days in the early 19th century.
We'll stay here tomorrow, there is plenty to see, the atmosphere around the harbour is nice and there is WiFi Internet (rare in Sweden until now!) which enables us to do some work. And Lyn is getting withdrawal symptoms from her piano. In short: time for a break!
