We went to see the Scheepvaartmuseum today, the museum that shows Amsterdam's link with the sea through the centuries. It has been completely renovated over many years and at huge expense but the end result is very good. A replica of an old East Indies merchant ship is included (not on the picture unfortunately)
But this is the view up the main mast of the 'Amsterdam':
After our visit, we went for a late, typical Dutch lunch (broodjes and kroketten).
And walked to the city centre, mainly to go to the Christmas shop (always open, even 265 days before Christmas) to get real Christmas tree candles. Back in Cape Town we like to use real candles instead of electric ones and they are unobtainable in Cape Town (and the Christmas shop keeper told us that he also now struggles to get them). Having made our purchase, we walked back to the ferry which takes us to the Sixhaven where Onbekommerd is. The city was heaving with people, a nice day, the May school holidays and whatever else contributing to the crowds.
The harbour is full as well, again:
After this picture was taken, several more boats have come in!
Tomorrow, we plan to go to the Rijksmuseum, which has also been completely redone. We fear large crowds there as well, but we'll go early. And with our 'museumkaarten', we won't have to queue for tickets.
